"Subject to the overriding need to preserve law and order, it is our determination that everyone should have absolute liberty to practice his belief according to the dictates of his conscience…”  - Sir Ahmadu Bello

Northern Leaders Extol Virtues of Sardauna
FROM SAXONE AKHAINE, KADUNA  - Jan 14, 2006

At the Sardauna 40th Anniversary in Kaduna

NORTHERN Elders, including Vice President Atiku Abubakar; former Military Head of State, retired Major General Muhammadu Buhari and former President Shehu Shagari yesterday extolled the virtues of the late Premier of Northern region, Sir Ahmadu Bello.

The Elders, including former Finance Minister, Malam Adamu Ciroma; Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) Chairman, Chief Sunday Awoniyi and Alhaji M.D. Yusuf, were part of the meeting at the capacity filled Arewa House Hall where varied opinions on how to better the lots of the North were held.

Atiku told the gathering at the 40th anniversary of the late Sardauna that they must stand up to defend Nigeria's democracy.

"Our democratic process has come under such severe stress over the past years that I believe all democrats must come out and openly proclaim their commitment to democratic development in our country," Atiku said.

"I am recalling these leadership attributes of the Sardauna as a plea to all political leaders to strive to restore ethics, ethos and best practices to our politics. That way we can sustain our democracy."

He also reminded participants that "leadership is both about performance and also about principles, honour and politically correct attitude in our democratic practice. We must therefore, respect the Nigerian Constitution. Constitutional amendment to fix emerging problems is welcome. But, the constitution should not be wantonly amended to undermine democracy."

Buhari remarked that the government of the late Sardauna was full of transparency as the hallmark of governance.

Members of the Northern Patriotic Front (NPF), led by former Alliance for Democracy (AD) Chairman, Ambassador Yusuf Mamman were seen in Kaduna metropolis in a convoy of motor cycles distributing leaflets on the virtues of the late Ahmadu Bello.

“Here in the Northern Nigeria we have People of Many different races, tribes and religious who are knit together to common history, common interest and common ideas, the things that unite us are stronger than the things that divide us. I always remind people of our firmly rooted policy of religious tolerance. We have no intention of favouring one religion at the expense of another. Subject to the overriding need to preserve law and order, it is our determination that everyone should have absolute liberty to practice his belief according to the dictates of his conscience…”  - Sir Ahmadu Bello
